ABUJA, NIGERIA- The five-day technical and medical training course organized by World Rugby, in collaboration with the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation, commenced on Tuesday, October 1 in Abuja. International instructors from Uganda,Kenya and South Africa are leading the training sessions.
Bwali Robert, Game Growth Manager for Rugby Africa, emphasized the significance of the course for developing rugby nations like Nigeria. “This will greatly impact the growth of the sport in a country of over 240 million people. Coaches from different regions are coming together, and the ripple effect on the game will be tremendous,” he said.
Robert also expressed satisfaction with the participants’ enthusiasm, noting that the turnout exceeded expectations. “I’m hopeful that as more Nigerians receive full training, the frequency of these seminars will decrease, as local experts can then train others and spread the knowledge across the country,” he added.
Denver Wannies, Regional Training Manager for Rugby Africa and World Rugby, highlighted the importance of proper training for players, explaining that this seminar will help coaches stay up-to-date with changes in the game and empower them to engage and train their communities.
Participants shared their excitement about the program. Obi Wilson Izuchukwu, preparing for life after retirement, said, “This training is timely and will guide me in my coaching career.” Favour Amarachi Orji, a bronze medalist at the National Youth Games, added, “The last course helped me prepare my team, which is why I wouldn’t miss this one.”
Though 30 participants were initially expected, the overwhelming response led the federation to adjust to accommodate more attendees
