The final of the 2024 Africa Men’s Sevens Cup will be contested between Uganda and Madagascar at the African Men’s Sevens tournament being played today, Sunday, June 30 in Mauritius.
Kickoff is at 16:32 EAT, following the finals for the 7th and 9thplaced Algeria vs Tunisia and Zambia vs Nigeria respectively.
Looking at the main competitors for the title, it is interesting that two matches in Sunday’s play-offs went into extra time.
Following Uganda’s extra-time win against the Ivory Coast in today’s quarterfinals, Madagascar and Burkina Faso also needed additional fitness for the extra time on the pitch in their semifinal clash.
- Madagascar were trailing by 5-19 when they struck towards the end of regular time with two quick-fire tries, both of which were converted to bring the score on equal terms at 19-all.
In extra time Jean Randriamalala scored the winning try for the Madagascar Makis, who had improved after the break. At the same time, Burkina Faso’s players were probably a little over-confident with their solid 19-5 halftime lead. They also made too many unforced errors on attack – perhaps the result of over-eagerness.
In the other (the first of the day) quarterfinal the two African sides at the recent repechage in Monaco to find the last team to the Olympic Games, locked horns. This time Uganda came out on top when they deservedly beat the South Africans 12-0 and relegated them to the Bronze Medal match before the final.
- Burkina Faso and South Africa will contest the Bronze Medal match for the third-placed winner.
- In other quarterfinal results, Mauritius went down 42-7 against Zimbabwe, who had blown hot and cold in the tournament. But they clicked for this match and scored six tries against one.
- Algeria lost 10-14 to Tunisia and in addition to that got the tournament’s wooden spoon.
