Thrilling Quarterfinals Mark Day 2 of Africa Men’s Sevens Cup in Mauritius

The Quarterfinals that set off Day 2 of the Africa Men’s Sevens tournament in Mauritius produced several close finishes – a logical expectation after the 12 sides were divided into the top eight and the other four teams that didn’t qualify for the Cup play-offs.

The quarters produced some good, tight matches with the first of the day, between Uganda and Cote d’Ivoire, going into extra time. Uganda scored the clincher to win 15-10 after the sides were locked at 10 points following two unconverted tries by each.

Kenya was the better side before the halftime break against South Africa and deservedly led 7-0 when the sides turned around. In the second half, however, the fleet-footed Jaden Barett ran in two tries, one of which was converted to give South Africa the 12-7 win.

  • Uganda and South Africa will now lock horns at 12:51 to determine who goes through to the final while Burkina Faso and Madagascar will follow next to determine the other place in this afternoon’s final.

The Cup semifinals will be preceded by Cote d’Ivoire who play Kenya, and Zimbabwe who face Mauritius in the fifth-place semifinals.

And then, following the two mentioned above, Algeria will face Tunisia and Zambia play Nigeria for the 11th and 9th positions in the tournament respectively.
