South Africa won – As in previous years, South Africa won once again the Women’s Sevens Africa Cup. The Blitzboks won all their matches ending with an amazing final against Kenya. Kenya put up a good fight and conceded victory on an honorable final score : 22 – 17.
The Lionesses took a 10 – 7 lead in the first half, but the Bok Women’s Sevens side fought back to go 17 – 10 up. The East Africans levelled the scores at 17 – 17, but a late try sealed the victory for the South Africans. It has to be said that their Olympics participation were very beneficial for them. Next year, they will have the opportunity to confirm their development at the Africa Cup 7s 2017, qualifying tournament for the World Cup 2018.
“I was very happy to see an incredible improvement in the standard of rugby played at this tournament; Kenya particularly have benefited enormously from their participation in the Olympics and well-orchestrated High Performance programme. It is very obvious that consideration must be given for more 7’s to be played in the region if the women’s game is going to continue to grow and improve.” Colleen de Jong – Zimbabwe Rugby Union’s CEO
