Rugby Africa Women’s Cup: Experienced Prop Called Up After Two Injured SA Players Return Home

South African National Team

South Africa has requested a replacement for the Springbok Women’s side after flanker Samantha Els and prop Aliyah Tchogna-Njamen sustained fractures in Saturday’s opening match of the Rugby Africa Women’s Cup against Cameroon in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

Both injuries occurred early in the match, with the injured players having made their run-on debuts for the Springboks.

South Africa Rugby reports that the Bulls Daisies prop, Asithandile Ntoyanto, has been called up to join the Springbok Women in Antananarivo on Sunday for the remainder of the competition underway in Madagascar.

Ntoyanto, who turns 33 on Monday and has 21 Test caps, replaces injured prop Aliyah Tchogna-Njamen. Els will not be replaced as the coaching team feels they have enough cover at loose forward.

Both Tchogna-Njamen and Els returned to South Africa for medical treatment on Sunday.

Ntoyanto has represented the Springbok Women at two World Cups. She last played for the team off the bench in last year’s WXV 2 in Cape Town and Stellenbosch against Samoa.

The Bulls Daisies player can play on either side of the scrum.

The second round of the 2024 Rugby Africa Women’s Cup, will commence at 13:00 (East African Time) on Wednesday, May 8, with South Africa playing against Kenya. She was followed by a match between Madagascar and Cameroon at 15:00 (East African Time).

All matches will be streamed on the Rugby Africa Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/RugbyAfrique) and YouTube Page (https://www.youtube.com/c/RugbyAfrique).
