Quarterfinalists For Second Leg and Title Race Announced

Uganda, the winner of the first leg of the Africa Men’s Sevens tournament in Mauritius, has been drawn to play Zambia in Sunday’s quarterfinals while Madagascar, the losing finalist last weekend will line up against Zambia who didn’t qualify for last weekend’s quarters.

It is important to note that the winner of the 2024 Africa Men’s Sevens title will be determined by adding their points of the first tournament last weekend and this leg’s final position together.

The bronze medal winner South Arica has a tough task in playing the losing semi-finalist Burkina Faso in their quarterfinal match-up. Kenya, despite losing to Madagascar in extra time in the penultimate pool match on Saturday, will face Tunisia on Sunday in the other play-off.

The quarterfinals –

Madagascar vs Tunisia and Burkina Faso vs South Africa (The two winners will meet in the semifinal)
Kenya vs Zimbabwe and Uganda vs Zambia (The two winners will meet in the semifinal)

The kick-off times aren’t available yet.

  • The ninth place will be contested by Algeria vs Nigeria and Cote D’Ivoire vs Mauritius.

Third Round pool play

The third and final round of pool-play in the second leg of the Africa Men’s Sevens Tournament in Mauritius on Saturday produced the only play-off and some good performances by underrated teams.

The highlight was the second match when last week’s losing finalist Madagascar was so very nearly pipped at the post after leading 12-0. Kenya crept closer with a try late in the first half and the two sides went into the break at 12-7 for last weekend’s losing finalists.

It became 14-12 to Kenya just after the break when Madagascar were down to six men with Amon Wamalwa scoring a converted try for Kenya to lead 14-12.

But it was far from over.

Another score for both sides, with the Makis converting, took the score to 19-all when Kenya scored just before the final whistle and extra time.

The extra time play-off belonged to the Kenyans. They did most of the playing and most of the attacking, until 6:43 minutes into extra time. A penalty against them was advanced and Madagascar scored the winner from there 7:43 minutes into the additional period.

Third Round Scores –
Zambia 33 Algeria 0, Kenya 19 Madagascar 24, Tunisia 12 Cote D’Ivoire 31, Uganda 14 Burkina Faso 10, Zimbabwe 12 South Africa 24.
