ACCRA, Ghana– His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana, welcomed the captains of the 12 national teams ahead of the 2024 Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens Tournament at the Jubilee House, official residence and office of the President, in Accra, Ghana. The event was held ahead the 2024 Rugby Africa tournament, taking place from Saturday, November 9 and Sunday, November 10.
Early in 2024, World Rugby highlighted Ghana, Nigeria and Zambia as three of the six emerging nations experiencing strong growth in rugby. Ghana’s hosting of the Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens Tournament demonstrates the country’s commitment to the development of women’s sports and the growing popularity of rugby across Africa.
The Rugby Africa tournament brings together the continent’s best female rugby players, marking a historic first for West Africa to host. Highlighting the growing talent and competitiveness of women’s rugby in Africa, the 2024 tournament provides a platform for athletes to demonstrate their skills on a continental stage.
Rugby Africa President, Herbert Mensah, led the delegation, accompanied by the Rugby Women’s Manager, Maha Zaoui, and World Rugby Regional Partnerships Manager for Africa, Coralie Van Den Berg. The captains present at the meeting represented their countries, which include host country Ghana, defending champions South Africa, Kenya, Tunisia, Zimbabwe, Burkina Faso, Madagascar, Mauritius, Uganda, Zambia, Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire.
Organized by Rugby Africa (www.rugbyafrique.com), the continental governing body of Rugby across Africa, in partnership with the Government of Ghana, the tournament serves as a qualifier for the 2025 Women’s Sevens Challenger Series, The winner alongside the second and third-placed teams will gain promotion to the international competition organized by World Rugby.
The 12-nation Rugby Women’s Sevens will be staged at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra on Saturday November 9 and Sunday November 10. The 2024 tournament is accessible to the public with free admission. All 34 matches are available for streaming on Supersport OTT Channel 950.
