2024 Rugby Africa Cup Match Day One: Zimbabwe Clings On After Uganda’s Second-Half Comeback

Zimbabwe’s sables manage to secure a spot on in the Rugby Africa Cup’ semifinals at Mandela National Stadium in Kampala, Uganda.

It was a tale of two halves, with Zimbabwe starting fiercely and Edward Siguake and Takudzwa Musingwini scoring two quick tries to give the Sables an early 12-0 lead on Saturday, July 20

The Uganda Rugby Cranes were unable to contain the physicality of the Zimbabweans and quickly lost the upper hand in the first half, as the latter added a third try to their tally of 22-0 after Ian Prior’s penalty kick.

Now for the second half: a total 180-degree turn around in events, with a Rugby Cranes team that is mentally revitalized sending Zimbabwe reeling. Philip Wokorach scored three points early to spark the home team’s storybook run.

Two tries followed through the magic touch of Philip Wokorach who scored one and created one for younger brother Innocent Gwokto – both tries were converted. A late Uganda penalty made it a 2 point game but Zimbabwe had the grit to hold on to a vital win that sees them face Namibia in the semi finals while Uganda faces Burkina Faso in the placement games at Mutesa II Stadium Wankulukuku on Wednesday, July 24.

FT Score: Uganda 20-22 Zimbabwe
