AC 2 West – The Africa Cup 2 West ended in Lomé (Togo). This year, Togo, Niger, Mali, Benin, Ghana and Burkina Faso were in confrontation for a 7s tournament. Indeed, every two years the Africa Cup for Western Africa alternates between a one-day 7s tournament including 6 teams the one year and a classic fifteen-a-side competition the following year.
On Friday, May 27th the teams met for a big day of rugby :
NIGER 15 – 10 TOGO
MALI 12 – 3 BENIN
BURKINA FASO 5 – 12 TOGO
GHANA 19 – 0 BENIN
NIGER 14 – 0 BURKINA FASO
MALI 0 – 15 GHANA
Semi-finals :
NIGER 0 – 26 MALI
GHANA 19 – 22 TOGO
5th and 6th place :
BURKINA FASO 5 – 22 BENIN
3rd and 4th place :
NIGER 5 – 14 GHANA
Final :
TOGO 12 – 17 MALI
Mali was crowned champion of the 2016 edition of the Africa Cup 2 West. Last year, Niger had won the fifteen-a-side rugby tournament but now they are only ranking 4th in the seven-a-side format. Mali and Togo thus distance themselves in 7s rugby. Good news for Central and Western Africa which only counts on a few teams in this discipline.
